How a note leaves this building.
Readers are asked to trust a Bolton desk with their Thursday morning. This page is the bargain: what we read, what we refuse, and how we correct ourselves.

01
Start from the British primary record
Consultations, statutory instruments, planning portals, Companies House, the Gazette, NESO and Elexon data, NAO reports, contract-award notices, Hansard, and the documents a company is legally required to file. Interviews come after the paper, not instead of it.
-
02
One British consequence, or it waits
A model release in California is not automatically a UK story. We ask: which site, which licence, which workforce, which bill? If we cannot name the consequence, we do not file.
-
03
On the record, then on background
Named sources are the default. Background is allowed for process and colour, never for a factual claim we cannot otherwise stand up. We do not launder lobbying as “people familiar with the matter” without saying who benefits.
-
04
A published refusal list
We will not sell a briefing slot, a quote placement, or a “partner insight”. We will not write personal investment recommendations. We will not accept embargoed copy that exists only to flatten a competitor. We will not file anonymised corporate case studies as news.
-
05
Two readers before send
Every Morning Signal is read by the writer and by a second desk editor. Private Desk notes get a third read when the subject is legal, medical or dual-use. Speed is a value. Being first and wrong is not.

Corrections are part of the product
If we get a fact wrong, the next Signal carries a correction with the original error named. Material errors are also noted on the relevant horizon piece. Write to [email protected] with “Correction” in the subject.
